Disinfectants Used in Cleaning Stethoscopes

A stethoscope is a listening device, used by members of the healthcare team, which amplifies sounds. These sounds may be a heartbeat, breathing sounds or the sounds of blood flowing.

The same stethoscope is used to listen to multiple patients. Germs can latch onto this device and, when not disinfected, can spread infection.
  1. 70 Percent Isopropyl Alcohol

    • The most common disinfectant for cleaning a stethoscope is 70 percent isopropyl alcohol, which is available in various forms. Sterile alcohol pads are usually readily available in healthcare facilities. A cotton ball or small gauze pad moistened with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol from a bottle can also be used. Proper disinfection requires a two-step approach. First, apply friction while wiping the stethoscope. Next, let the residual alcohol air dry.

    Ethanol-based Hand Cleaner

    • Alcohol-based foam contains ethanol rather than isopropyl alcohol. This foam makes hand washing easy when a sink is not readily available. A stethoscope can be cleaned at the same time, making this method extremely convenient. In the October 1, 2009 issue of "Emergency Medicine Reports," Dr. Richard Wall, found that "... cleaning a stethoscope with an ethanol-based foam hand cleaner is as effective as wiping it with an isopropyl alcohol pad."

    Antibacterial Soap or Wipes

    • Healthcare workers report using antibacterial soap or wipes; however, available studies do not include these options. Recommendations for using antibacterial soap or wipes must wait for sufficient research.
