1
Contact your water treatment plants and ask about the concentration of fluoride in your water. If it is anywhere near four milligrams per liter, which is the maximum amount allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency, then you should take steps to remove fluoride from water before drinking it or cooking with it. You can also use a fluoride test kit to test the amount of fluoride in your water yourself.

2
Choose a method for filtering your water. To get rid of some of the fluoride in your water, you will need to use a water filter. You can attach a filter to your sink, have one installed under your sink or have an in-line water filtration system installed, which is the most expensive option.
-
3
Install a carbon filter using the method you chose. Although there is currently no way to remove 100 percent of the fluoride from your water, a carbon filter is the most effective option. If you did not choose the in-line water filtration system option, be sure the sink the carbon filter is installed on is the only sink your family uses for drinking and cooking water.

4
Replace your carbon filter as recommended by the manufacturer. A dirty, worn out filter will not be properly filtering the fluoride from your water. Periodically testing your water after it's been through the filter with a fluoride test kit will help you evaluate the effectiveness of the filter you're using.
