Grants for Co-Pays for Prosthetics
Learning to live with an amputation is a challenge. Paying for the prothesis and after care should not be. Foundations and organizations exist throughout the United States to help amputees get the prostheses and follow-up care they need to get around and live independently.-
The Barr Foundation Amputee Assistance Fund
-
This fund, started in 1995, is funded with grants from the Barr Foundation. The mission of the fund is to assist amputees who cannot afford limbs and have no other financial resources, as well as to promote the quality of care for all amputees. The grant pays for materials and the fitting of a new prosthesis after financial need has been established by the prosthetist. Priority is given to applicants who are recent amputees just starting prosthetic rehabilitation, who are U.S. citizens and in general good health. Visit abcop.org for a directory of American Board Certified practitioners in your state. Keep in mind that the prosthetist, not the amputee, must request the application directly from the foundation. There is a non-refundable $25 application fee.
