Nursing Standards of Practice in Connecticut
In general, Connecticut adheres to the nursing standards set forth by the American Nurses Association (ANA). The Connecticut Department of Public Health (CDPH) regulates nursing in Connecticut, and all nurses are held to the highest professional standards of practice.-
ANA Standards
-
The ANA is the largest association of nurses in the United States and helps maintain the highest nursing standards possible. ANA standards of practice cover all areas of nursing and are detailed in describing acceptable practices. Standards include assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, coordination of care and consulting; each standard has detailed measurement criteria.
Connecticut Standards
-
Departments such as the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services and the Department of Children and Families have specific nursing standards in addition to the ANA's that apply to their particular nursing duties and difficulties. Departments such as these have detailed guidelines outlining their standards of practice.
Licensing
-
In Connecticut, all nurses are licensed by the CDPH and must first complete the required educational prerequisites before being licensed. Licensing is by examination, with different requirements for each nursing level. Out-of-state or international nursing candidates must meet Connecticut requirements before licensing.
