How to Check a CNA License

You may want to hire a licensed certified nursing assistant (CNA) to help with professional medical care duties, and it may be worth checking the status of her CNA license. Certified nursing assistants register with state boards (or an occasional non-state board, as in Washington, D.C.), and most of the boards have online registry information for checking a CNA license.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the list of state CNA licensing and registration agencies maintained by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation (see "Resources").

    • 2

Find the licensing board for the state where the CNA is registered (see "Resources").

    • 3

Look for the CNA's name in the state online registry (see "Resources"). Almost all state boards have online registry information where you can look up the status of a CNA registration. Searching is generally by name.

    • 4

Contact the registration board directly if there is no online access to registry information. The board can confirm the status of a CNA registration over the phone, by fax or through the mail.
