Operating Room Nurse-Mentorship Programs

Nurses who are new to the operating room or just new to the nursing field need to get experience in how the operating room works and the pressures that they will be facing. Operating room or perioperative nurses will mentor students or recent graduates to help them through this process. The goals of these mentorships are to train new nurses, but they also encourage more nurses to work in this area of the hospital.
  1. New Hampshire Operating Room Novice Nurse Program

    • This mentorship program lasts one year, and it is open to students that have recently graduated and who have passed the New Hampshire N-CLEX exam. This program will combine classroom experience with actual clinical experience in both the operating room and the medical/surgical units. Accepted nurses will shadow an experienced nurse in these areas for six months. Then, for the last six months, nurses will be taking shifts in the OR and medical/surgical areas. There is no fee to participate in this program, and nurses will be paid a salary. They are also eligible for standard benefits. Once completed, students will be expected to spend the next two years working for the hospital.

New York Hospital Emergency Room Nurse Fellowship

    • This program seeks to address the hospital's shortage of operating room and emergency room nurses by offering qualified candidates a five-month fellowship. During this fellowship, students will be spending the first eight weeks of the program learning about these fields via a computer training program. Then, for the rest of the program they will be shadowing a mentor nurse and receiving hands-on training in both the operating and emergency rooms. Preference for this program is given to nurses who already have one year of med/surg hospital experience, and participants are expected to work at the hospital once they complete the program.

    Colorado Nursing Mentorship Program

    • This program is open to all nurses currently working at all locations of The Children's Hospital, and nurses can be working in any section of the hospital, including the operating room. The goal of this program is to provide nurses with a confidant mentor who can help them deal with issues and with whom they can discuss ideas. Mentors are generally experienced nurses who volunteer their time to help other nurses within their division, and they commit a certain amount of time each week to assist their mentees.
