Otolaryngology Associations

Otolaryngology deals with the head and neck areas of the human body and doctors in this practice area treat health problems related to patients' ears, noses and throats. To keep abreast with relevant research and regulations in the field, otolaryngology practitioners have a choice of professional organizations dedicated to advancing this kind of medicine.
  1. American Academy of Otolaryngology

    • The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) is an organization dedicated to professionals who provide treatment to the head and neck areas of patients, including ear, nose and throat treatments. These doctors focus on conditions such as sleep apnea, hearing loss, sinusitis, allergies, dizziness, ear infections and snoring.

The AAO-HNS's mission is to advance the field through research and education and promote ethical standards for those practicing otolaryngology---including standards on how to work with patients and colleagues, prescribe medications, conduct research and advertise their services.

The AAO-HNS organizes instructional courses, seminars and events, including its annual meeting and "Oto Expo." The meeting is held each fall and attracts otolaryngologists from around the world who gather to participate in scientific presentations, lectures and seminars. Members of the AAO-HNS also have access to job postings, "The Journal Otolaryngology---Head and Neck Surgery" and grants and awards.

    Otolaryngology Administrators

    • The Association of Otolaryngology Administrators (AOA) was founded in 1982 by Patrick Connolly. Connolly wanted to create a way for administrators in the otolaryngology field to communicate with each other about the issues that affect their discipline.

Members of the AOA benefit from the association's education programs (including web seminars and the annual education conference). They have access to certification programs, a monthly newsletter, updates about regulations that impact the field, forums to network with other members and a quarterly magazine. The organization has more than 950 members, as of 2010.

    Research Association

    • The Association for Research in Otolaryngology ( ARO) promotes scientific research in the otolaryngology field. To that end, the association publishes the quarterly journal, "JARO: The Journal of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology."

Members of the ARO benefit from the association's educational programs, such as the midwinter meeting, a listing in the ARO's membership directory and emails about the news that affects professionals in the field.
