Aboriginal Health Grants

According to government health agencies in Canada and Australia, Aboriginal and Indigenous people are more susceptible to early mortality and morbidity. There are many health concerns for Aboriginal people living in remote area where there maybe be little or no access to quality health care. Health project grants aim to help improve the health of Aboriginal people by providing better access to health care, education, preventive care, improved training for local doctors and research. These project initiative are supported by grants that are awarded to eligible applicants.
  1. The Atlantic Aboriginal Health Research Program (AAHRP)

    • The Atlantic Aboriginal Health Research Program (AAHRP) is a private organization that supports efforts to increase Aboriginal people in the field of health research. The purpose of this grant is to learn more about health issues and concerns of Aboriginal people while providing research opportunities for Aboriginal organizations and institutions. The agency prefers projects that will be relevant to Aboriginal health and provide opportunities for research and training to Aboriginal communities. Research grant awards range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the proposed project. Potential applicants should obtain an application from the site and submit it to the listed mailing address.     National Rural and Remote Health Infrasturcture Program

    • The Australian Department of Health and Aging has grants to help health programs in rural Aboriginal areas. The grant program called Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program(NRRHIP), has been give $46 million for the development partnerships and strategies to delivery health care services to rural and remote Aboriginal communities. The grant program has goals to establish and improve medical facilities, expand the availability of health care services, improve resources and facilities of private doctors in order to effectively train medical students and improve the infrastructure of hospitals in Aboriginal areas. This grant opportunity is open to organizations and individuals who have an Australian business or company number and applicants who desire to carry out projects within communities that have a population of 20,000 people or less. Grant award amounts can range with a maximum amount of $500,000. Application packages can be downloaded and submitted electronically through the website.

    A Healthy Start to Life for ATSI Children Grant

    • The National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia has research grants to improve the lives of Aboriginal children. According to the agency Australia's indigenous peoples suffer poorer health than other Australians. The purpose of this grant is to better understand the social dynamics in the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in order to improve maternal, infant and childhood health by early intervention efforts. In order to apply, the applicant that has been registered as an NHMRC institutional research project must be multi-disciplinary and investigators must already have a research question. Grant awards will be up to $10,000 for up to a year of research. Potential applicants must submit an application on line through the department's website.
