Description of a Dorsal Recumbent Position
Successful health care treatment begins with a physical examination to identify the health problem. The dorsal recumbent position is often used for such examinations.-
Definition
-
Dorsal means "back," and recumbent means "lying down." So the dorsal recumbent position literally means lying down on the back. The client is positioned with the legs spread apart and knees bent with feet flat on the table. While awaiting examination, the patient is draped for privacy and comfort.
Purpose
-
A health care provider positions the patient in the dorsal recumbent position to examine upper parts of the body such as the abdomen, head, chest, neck or genitals or lower parts of the body such as genitals and rectum or buttocks. The dorsal recumbent position is comfortable for patients who may have back pain, abdominal problems or difficulty with other positions. The position is also used for insertion of catheters to drain urine from the bladder.
Warnings
-
Safety of the patient is the first priority in all medical procedures. Closely observe the patient after positioning her on the exam table. "Delmar's Comprehensive Medical Assisting" warns health care providers, "Never turn your back on a seriously ill or disoriented patient or young children. Ensure patient safety at all times."
