Students who have already earned their Master of Science in Nursing degree may opt to pursue the certificate option. This program is entirely online and is designed for actively working registered nurses. Course topics include holistic nursing theories, herbology, pharmacology, stress management, ancient healing practices and integrative medicine combining western medicine with other healing approaches.

• The New York College of Health Professions has a holistic nursing program leading to a certificate of completion at the end of four terms that include 50 hours of clinical experience. Courses include holistic nursing theory with an introduction to channels and points, basic Asian body work, applied Asian bodywork technique and tai chi chuan.

Canyon College

• Canyon College in California has an online holistic nursing program leading to a certificate. This self-paced course is divided into seven modules, each followed by an examination. Students must complete the program in no more than 12 months. The course modules include holistic nursing practice I and II, health promotion, wellness education, alternative therapies, clinical stress management and meditation practice and therapy.

New York University

• The College of Nursing at New York University has a holistic nurse practitioner program that the website says is the first of its kind in the United States. Students pursue a Master of Science or a post-master’s advanced certificate. After completing the program, students can take the certificate examination administered by the American Holistic Nurses’ Association. Courses include contemporary practice roles, psychoneuroimmunology, primary care and nursing strategies and holistic primary care of adults.
