Readi-Cat is a brand name for barium sulfate, a drug that coats the inside of the stomach so that better X-rays and CAT scans are achieved. It is used in the diagnosis of certain diseases that affect the stomach, esophagus or intestines. Readi-Cat is available in paste, cream, tablet or liquid form, and it is generally taken the day before a scheduled X-ray. Although it aids in producing better imaging on X-rays and CAT scans, it can cause moderate to severe side effects.

    • Some of the common side effects of Readi-Cat are nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and constipation. These side effects vary depending on the patient and generally do not require medical assistance. Also, some side effects may disappear as your body acclimates itself to the medication. There are steps you can take to ease some of these common side effects: To help with nausea, chew on sugar-free gum or hard candy. To prevent constipation, increase your intake of fiber and drink more liquids.

    Severe Effects

    • Readi-Cat can cause more severe side effects, such as appendicitis, severe continued constipation, acute stomach cramps, acute abdominal pain, ringing in the ears, a rapid heart beat, pale skin and tremors. Some people are allergic to barium sulfates. In this case, allergic reactions, such as wheezing, breathing problems and tightness in the chest, may result from its use. Other indications of an allergic reaction to Readi-Cat are coughing, hives, itching and swelling of the face, tongue, throat or lips. Any of these more severe symptoms should not be ignored.
