How to Find Your NPI

An NPI, or "National Provider Identifier," is a code used to identify individual health care providers in the United States. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), National Provider Identifiers are used "to uniquely identify a health care provider in standard transactions, such as health care claims."
Identifying your NPI, whether you are an individual health care provider or part of an organizational provider, is a simple process of searching the public NPI records database that the CMS provides online.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the NPI Registry Search page, which is run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (see Reference).

    • 2

Click the "Search for an Individual Provider" or the "Search for an Organizational Provider" link at the bottom of the page, depending on which one you are searching for.

    • 3

Fill out the information (name, street address, city and state, etc.) for the provider. Although only one field has to be filled out to perform a search, the more information you provide, the more accurate your search will be.
