A Home Remedy to Remove Gasoline Odor

The smell of gasoline is often nauseating to people. Whether you have the odor on your hands, in your car, or at home, the smell is bound to bother you. There is a solution, however, that is simple and uses products you probably already have in your home. It works, if you work diligently at removing the odor.

Simplest Remedies

• If you have gasoline on your hands, look into your kitchen pantry or cupboard, and see if you have any baking soda and vinegar.

Removing the Oily Sheen

• After you have ascertained that you have the products necessary, remember that gasoline is an oil-based product, therefore you will probably notice an oily sheen on your hands. This oily sheen can be removed somewhat by grittier hand soaps, such as mechanics use, but that doesn't necessarily get rid of the smell of gasoline. Additionally, degreasing dish soap will be needed, or you can use a stronger hand soap or detergent.

Home Solutions for Removing Gasoline

• After you wash and dry your hands with the dish soap or other degreasing soap, mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. You can alternately use hydrogen peroxide, if you don't like the smell of vinegar, and use the same portions. Dip a face cloth into the solution and scrub your hands, clothing, or other surfaces with the solution as best you can.

Removing Gasoline from Carpets and Furniture

• The gasoline spot, and its odor, may not be confined to your skin or clothes. If the gasoline has gotten into your carpet, you can spot-clean to remove the smell, but you might need to use a carpet cleaner to remove the oily spot that gasoline can leave behind.

Getting Rid of the Odor

• Vinegar and peroxide are able to remove the smell of gasoline. If you use vinegar, the spot will only temporarily smell like vinegar. Peroxide doesn't have much of a smell. Since gasoline is extremely flammable, take care in removing it from anything, and do not go near an open flame.
