How to Become a Phlebotomy Technician in Arizona

Phlebotomists are one of the many allied health professionals in demand. Phlebotomy technicians are trained to draw blood from patients using a variety of techniques. They can be found supporting doctors, nurses and allied heath professions such as medical assistants and paramedics. Training in phlebotomy is an essential step toward becoming a phlebotomist. A license or a certificate to practice phlebotomy is not required by the state of Arizona. Although, phlebotomists holding a national certification are preferred by many employers in Arizona.

  Choose a phlebotomy training program. The program should prepare students to work in the field and to qualify to take a written exam for national certification. Phlebotomy programs are offered by technical schools, colleges and trade schools.

  Complete the chosen phlebotomy program and obtain a certificate of completion. Students focus on becoming skilled in the different techniques used to draw blood. Students become knowledgeable in handling blood in a safe and sanitary manner. Students learn to properly interact with patients of a variety of ages.

  Complete a practicum or internship to gain practical experience drawing blood and interacting with patients. Arizona employers may give preference to an applicant with work experience in addition to a certification of completion of a phlebotomy program.

  Take the written exam to obtain a certification from a national certifying association such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians or the National Phlebotomy Association. The association chosen should best match the training program and internship completed. National certification, though not required by the state of Arizona, will increase employment opportunities, as many employers require it.
