How to Attach EKG Leads

The electrocardiogram test, alternately referred to as an EKG or ECG, is designed to measure the electrical activity of the heart. The test is non-invasive and is painless for the patient. The process of attaching the EKG leads is a simple one and only requires basic knowledge of human anatomy.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the areas where the EKG leads are to be placed. One lead is placed on the right pectoral muscle just below the clavicle, another between the left shoulder and clavicle and one on the subject's left side on about the fifth rib. Additional areas are required for 12-lead machines (see References).

    • 2

Clean the first area with gauze. Alcohol may be used but is not necessary.

    • 3

Abrade the area slightly with a scrub pad.

    • 4

Remove the plastic film from the sticky side of the electrode and place it on the prepared area.

    • 5

Repeat the previous steps for each area that requires a lead.

    • 6

Snap the leads into the attached electrodes.

    • 7

Secure the leads in place using medical tape.

    • 8

Turn on EKG monitor and verify that the readings are correct and that all of the leads are functioning properly.
