School nurses attempt to meet the health needs of young people at educational institutions. A school nurse works independently to carry out a range of responsibilities, from assisting after minor accidents to conducting workshops on current medical issues and focusing on health education.   Consider how to reduce the number of days students are absent for health reasons. Students who miss a lot of school have trouble catching up on past-due assignments, perform less well on tests, and don't get the most of their educational experience. Some health issues can't be prevented, but the goal should be to have students in school as often as possible.

  Focus on students who have conditions that hinder their progress. Ask teachers and other school personnel to tell you about any students with health challenges that prevent them from speaking, hearing and paying attention as well as others. After you perform the appropriate tests, refer these students to a speech, hearing or other specialist who can help.

  Educate families about health issues. Many parents and guardians are busy with work, family obligations, and other duties, so you may need to send multiple notices home with a student to make sure they are received. Hold workshops to dispel myths and ease fears about issues such as the H1N1 virus.
