How to Get a Medical Technician Certificate

Medical technicians are allied health personnel who perform a variety of supportive tasks within a healthcare setting. Certification programs provide additional training and preparation for state licensing exams; some states accept passing scores from a certification exam for licensure. As the professional association for medical technologists, medical technicians, and other allied health professionals, American Medical Technologists (AMT) provides the examination for a medical technician certificate.

Instructions

Complete a medical technician training program. Training programs are usually two semesters in length and offer coursework such as medical terminology, anatomy, pathology, medical laboratory skills, basic life support, and human growth and development. The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences hosts a website that allows you to search for a nearby training program.

Complete an application to take the American Medical Technologists national certification exam for medical technicians. Application forms are available on the AMT website at www.amt1.com. Mail the completed form and exam fee of $130 to AMT for processing. Once the AMT staff have verified your eligibility to take the exam, you will receive instructions on how to schedule your exam. You may take the exam at the school where you completed your training program, or you may schedule it at a community test center.

Study for the exam using exam preparation materials developed by AMT or by other professional organizations. According to AMT, most exam prep materials include practice exams, lists of reference materials to study, and a general outline of the exam's sections. Take the exam; note that if you chose to take the exam at a community test center, you will receive your score upon completion of the test. Passing scores yield an official certificate from AMT.
