North Carolina EMT Programs
North Carolina cities are growing fast, and the need for trained emergency services personnel is increasing as well, according to Wake Technical College. North Carolina offers students wishing to become an emergency medical technician--or EMT--a variety of programs to get the necessary training. North Carolina colleges offer 14 associate's degree EMT programs, and one North Carolina school even offers a bachelor's degree EMT program.-

Catawba Valley Community College offers an associate's degree in Emergency Medical Science (Paramedic) to students who wish to become an EMT. Nationally accredited since 1985, the Emergency Medical Science (Paramedic) degree program takes about two years to complete. Prerequisites for admission include a high school diploma or GED, completion of a general biology course, three personal references and a completed physical exam form signed by a doctor attesting to your ability to perform clinical health services. Students in the program will learn basic and advanced life support techniques through classroom work, lab sessions, hospital experiences and field excursions. Coursework includes anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, airway management, cardiology and advanced trauma management. Students who complete the program are eligible to sit for state and national certification and licensure exams.

Gaston College

Gaston College is a two-year community college offering an associate's degree in emergency medical science at its three campuses in and around Dallas, North Carolina. The degree program requires that students who want to become an EMT complete 73 credit hours in courses such as anatomy, microbiology, rescue scene management, pharmacology, life span emergencies and intermediate interventions. Completion of the program takes two full years and includes four clinical practicum courses, where students rotate through clinical hands-on experiences. Gaston College also offers a 10-week EMT summer boot camp for emergency services personnel who need a refresher, additional continuing education or preparation for re-certification. Pre-requisites for admission include proof of vaccinations and certification in CPR at the health care provider level. Students must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

Wake Technical Community College is a two-year technical and community college in Raleigh, North Carolina. Wake Tech offers an associate's degree program in emergency medical services, as well as non-credit continuing education courses in EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate Upgrade and EMT-Paramedic Upgrade. The coursework in the degree program and the non-credit program is the same; the main difference is whether students wish to receive credit and a degree upon completion of all coursework. Courses cover topics such as airway management, pharmacology, emergency response, trauma management, EMT-Basic, intermediate interventions, general psychology and rescue scene management. Pre-requisites for entry into the program include completion of a high school diploma program or GED, completion of a general chemistry course, and attainment of minimum requirements for reading, English and math.
