How to Transfer a Nurse Aide Certification

If you are a Certified Nurse Aide and want to move to another state, you will need to transfer your certification to the state you want to move to before you will legally be allowed to work as a Nurse Aide in that state. Generally, this is a fairly simple process, but regulations will vary from state to state.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the Nurse Aide/Assistant Registry or Board of Nursing for the state in which you currently live (sending state) as well as the state where you want to move (receiving state). Ask specifically if they participate in reciprocity, or licensure by endorsement. Most states do but there are exceptions and some states will accept reciprocity only from certain states.

    • 2

File the necessary application and send it to the appropriate state (verify this with the receiving state). Required paperwork will vary according to state policies, but be prepared to send at least a copy of your photo ID or drivers license, a copy of your Social Security card or proof of legal right to work in the U.S., a copy of your current Nurse Aide certification and verification of your employment or training as a Nurse Aide.

    • 3

Keep your contact information updated with both states. Once your application has been received, you may be required to submit additional materials like fingerprinting or background check authorization, or meet additional requirements such as passing an examination by the receiving state or completing additional training. There are usually time limits dated from when the original application for a transfer was received, so you will want to be sure you are receiving all the necessary information in a timely manner.
