How to Find a Physician by License Number

There are many ways to find physicians, ranging from asking your family doctor for a referral to checking your health insurance provider's physician directories. You can also find a physician by license number, using resources developed by state licensing organizations. Finding a physician by license number is an easy process.

  1. Search for Physicians by License Number

    • 1

Find a physician by searching your state medical board's directory of licensed health professionals. The Federation of State Medical Boards and the American Medical Association both provide complete directories of all state medical boards, their contact information and links to their websites. Online tools on the websites of state medical boards allow consumers to search for physicians by last name, address or license number.

Search for physicians through your state's department of health. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) provides consumers with an interactive map that allows them to find contact information and websites for the health departments in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each health department website provides a tool to verify physician licenses or to search for doctors by license.

Use resources developed by Administrators in Medicine (AIM), an organization that represents state health executives. AIM's DoctorFinder tool allows you to perform a simple search by physician name and then refine the search by license number or state, or link to state-level resources to perform a search by license number directly instead of using the AIM tool.
