Contact the rehab that you want to attend and ask to speak with the insurance coordinator. Tell the insurance coordinator that your health insurance is through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Provide the insurance coordinator with your member identification number, group identification number, and customer service phone number located on your insurance identification card.

Ask the insurance coordinator to contact Blue Cross Blue Shield on your behalf to obtain authorization for treatment. Though you can contact Blue Cross Blue Shield yourself, insurance companies tend to respond faster when the rehab center is calling.

Follow up with the insurance coordinator. In some cases, the insurance company will need documentation from your doctors or therapists in order to approve the authorization request. If this is the case, contact your doctors or therapists and ask them to contact Blue Cross Blue Shield. In many cases, Blue Cross Blue Shield simply wants to hear from one of the health care professionals that has been treating you that you require rehabilitative treatment.

Notify the insurance coordinator that you have contacted your doctors and therapists if information from them was necessary. Ask the insurance coordinator to follow up on your authorization request.

Follow up with the insurance coordinator to verify that the authorization request was approved. Once verification has been received, ask to speak with the admissions coordinator.

Follow up with the admissions coordinator to arrange for your treatment. The admissions coordinator should be able to walk you through the admissions process for the rehab that you have chosen to attend.
