How to Choose a Power Scooter
If you have limited mobility, a power scooter may be just the thing you need to regain your independence. For many people, a power scooter is a medical necessity, especially for elderly people who can no longer stand or walk for long periods of time. There are many factors to consider in choosing the right power scooter for your needs.Instructions

1
Start by asking your doctor if she recommends any particular company that sells power scooters. Your doctor is an invaluable partner in the process since, if you get the right diagnosis from her, it is a covered medical benefit under insurance. (See Resources 1) Your doctor may have a medical supply company that she trusts and typically recommends to her patients. If you trust your doctor, then you can trust that she'll help steer you in the right direction during your power scooter search.

2
Ask any friends or family members that use a power scooter what type they use, where they purchased it and if they would recommend it. Make a list of the power scooters that are recommended by your doctor, friends and family members. This list will be a good starting point when researching possible medical suppliers and power scooters.

Visit the websites of medical suppliers that were recommended to you. If you were unable to get any recommendations, search online for medical suppliers in your area that sell power scooters. Examples include Lewin Medical Supply, Allegro Medical Supplies and U.S. Medical Supplies. Check out the selection and price range for each supplier, and make a note of power scooters you like.

Be sure you can physically test out a power scooter before purchasing it if at all possible. You need to make sure the power scooter you choose works for your body type. You want your legs and feet to be in a comfortable position, and you want good back support. The power scooter needs to be able to fit through doorways as well. Also, make sure you can easily manipulate the controls. Elderly people often have a difficult time understanding how to use complicated controls. Make sure you understand how to operate the power scooter before purchasing it. (See References 1)

5
Determine if you're going to be riding your power scooter primarily indoors or primarily outdoors. If you'll be mostly using it in the house, you should choose a scooter with front-wheel drive. These scooters are smaller and easier to maneuver than those with rear wheel drive. Rear wheel drive scooters, however, are much better for outdoor use. (See References 1)

6
Ask about the safety mechanisms of the power scooter you're considering purchasing. Quality power scooters include an anti-tip feature as well as a stable base. A stable base is especially important for sharp turns and riding uphill. Make sure the power scooter you purchase has a battery life of at least 12 months and that a battery charger is included with the power scooter. You should be able to easily transport the power scooter you choose with a lift mechanism that attaches to the trunk of a car. If you already have a lift, make sure the power scooter you choose will be compatible. Be sure to ask about warranties before purchasing a power scooter. If your power scooter breaks or malfunctions, you want to make sure the parts and service are covered by the warranty. (See References 1)

Decide which power scooter to choose based on criteria that's most important to you, such as size, price and safety features. Visit the store to purchase the power scooter you choose, or if you were able to test it out already, you can order it online.
