How to Use EKG Machines

Electrocardiography (EKG or ECC) machines are universal in the ability to read cardiac activity and provide a printout demonstrating the electrical activity of the heart. While EKG machines vary in style, setup and operation, the standards for correct use remain similar. Every EKG machine comes with a manual for fast reference if you have questions about use, though knowing basic steps for EKG operations will make performing EKGs on any machine easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for instructions or diagrams printed on the EKG machine for reference of its use. You may find laminated cards attached to the machine, or an operations manual, for reference.

    • 2

Locate the power button and turn on the machine. Though most EKG machines run on battery power, plug the machine into a proper outlet to maintain a steady supply of power while you are performing the EKG, instead of relying on the battery alone.

    • 3

Enter your patient information into the EKG machine computer. You may need to type in your patient's name, vital statistics, diagnosis and physician information on a keyboard or via a touch screen. Make sure you have saved the patient information to the machine before moving on, if needed.

    • 4

Determine what type of EKG has been ordered for the patient: a 3-lead, 5-lead or 12-lead EKG. If appropriate, select the type of EKG on the computer. This will ensure the machine is primed to read and deliver the correct EKG.

    • 5

Prepare your patient for the EKG test and apply the electrodes and leads in proper order. Have your patient lie still once all electrodes and leads are placed, and instruct him to remain still until after the EKG is complete. Patient movement can interfere with the cardiac reading.

    • 6

Look at the EKG computer monitor, if applicable, to be sure the machine is reading an appropriate rhythm. This includes a reading that is free of spikes or dips caused by patient movement or incorrect lead placement. Once you are confident the rhythm looks appropriate, press the print button to capture, and print the EKG reading.

    • 7

Complete the EKG test by allowing the machine to save the patient information, if needed. Then unhook your patient from the machine and turn the power off.
