How to Apply for Veterans Disability Benefits
Veterans disabled during their military service are eligible for up to several thousands of dollars in tax-free benefits each year from the United States military. Before filing any paperwork, read the eligibility requirements at military.com/benefits/military-pay/va-disability-compensation#1. You want to make sure you are eligible for benefits.

Call the Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-800-827-1000 or visit vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp to request VA Form 21-526. You can fill out the form in paper or online. Submit the form and all other requested paperwork.

Write down the name of the person you speak with on the phone or the confirmation number given you when you submit the forms online. You may need this information to follow up later if there are delays or questions. Otherwise, your application will be processed and you will be informed (usually via postal mail) of the VA's decision to grant you benefits and what benefits, if any, you have been granted.
