Proper Placement of a Bedpan

Patients who cannot get out of bed to use the restroom will require a bedpan. Drugs.com states that women can use a bedpan for bowel movements and urination. Men also use bed pans to move their bowels, but many prefer a portable urinal for liquid waste. For best results and patient use, the bedpan needs to be properly placed near the bed. This ensures the patient will be able to use it comfortably without making a mess in the bed.
  1. Preparation

    • According to experts at drugs.com, put on a pair of disposal gloves to protect your hands from contact with body fluids and waste products. Rinse the bedpan in warm water and dry it completely. Sprinkle a light coating of baby powder on the edge to help it slide under the patient more easily. Bring a roll of toilet paper to the patient along with the bedpan.

    Placement

    • Experts at Care.com suggest warning the patient before placing the bedpan. If the person is able to raise up to use the it without assistance, put a waterproof pad and then the bedpan under the buttocks. You can support the lower back with one hand while doing this if needed. If possible, raise the head of the bed to help the patient maintain a sitting position. Give the patient privacy by leaving the room or simply by turning your back if the person is too weak or ill to be left alone.

If the patient cannot raise up, roll the person onto one side and place the pad and bedpan for them. Use one hand to position the bedpan against the buttocks, then roll the patient back while keeping the pan in place.

    Removal

    • If the patient can, have them slide out the bedpan after they are done. If the patient is unable to raise his/her buttocks, roll the person over just enough to be able to remove the bedpan without spilling it. If necessary, clean up with toilet paper and wash the area with a warm, wet washcloth.
According to experts at Care.com always wipe from front to back. Gently dry the area, looking for any sores or redness that may need to be treated.
