Nurse Description
The role of the nurse is to promote the health of their patients and to prevent illness. Nurses provide patients and their families with education, advice and support. Nurses work under the direction of a physician or nursing supervisor.-
Types Of Nurses
-
Many nurses are general practice nurses who provide all types of care to many patients. They are often referred to as staff nurses. But nurses might specialize in areas such as surgery, mental health, pediatrics and more.
Patient Information
-
Nurses record patient information into the chart. This includes their medical history, symptoms, current medications and other data as needed.
Performing Tests
-
Nurses perform many basic patient tests. A nurse might assess a patent's cognitive function, take their blood pressure or record results from patient monitoring equipment. A nurse must be able to interpret this data to physicians and other nurses clearly and accurately.
Administering Medications
-
Nurses administer medications to patients. They apply topical creams or ointments, and help the patient swallow pills and liquids. Nurses are often responsible for starting and monitoring any intravenous medications a patient might receive.
Developing Care Plans
-
Working in tandem with physicians and other health care providers, nurses develop care plans for patients during their stay and after discharge, if needed. The nurse might perform a follow-up with the patient and his family to ensure the patient is adhering to treatment.
Working Conditions
-
Nurses often stand for many hours, and are in direct contact with patients and their family members. Nurses must perform well under pressure. Generally, full-time nurses work 40 hours per week; but this often includes night, evening and weekend shifts.
