How to Get a DNA Test Result

Getting a DNA result can take approximately three to five working days. Individuals may need to have this type of test performed for either for legal or personal reasons. Locating the right place for a DNA test is important; it assures accurate and reliable results will be taken. It is also important to choose a DNA testing center that guarantees privacy and that keeps legal or personal DNA results private until the person in question collects them personally. This ensures confidentiality when collecting your DNA results. There are also home DNA test kits on the market that individuals can perform at home.

Purchase a home DNA kit. The home kit for DNA test is packaged in an envelope. This is to ensure privacy. It contains one swab per person. Open the kit gently to retrieve the swabs. Gargle clean water to remove food particles or drink residue from your mouth. Collect a sample to be used for DNA testing by taking a swab of the inner surface of the cheeks. Do this by gently rubbing against the inside of the cheeks with a sterile swab. Place the sample taken in the envelope kit provided.

Label the kit. Ensure you provide correct details on the kit, such as name, address and other contact information. Seal it tightly after making sure that you have labeled it properly.

    • 3

Provide information: Fill out the forms contained in the DNA kit. Retrieve the papers and fill in every required field with accurate and relevant information. Make sure you specify how you want to receive the results from the DNA test. You can have the DNA test results sent to your address. If you want extra services, such as detailed interpretation of the outcome, then you can specify that request, too.

Mail the package. Place the packet with the sample and the filled-out paperwork into the envelope. Seal it completely and label it if there is no return address already written on the envelope. Make sure that you write the correct mailing details for the DNA testing center and post the envelope.

Wait for the test. The center you sent your sample to will carry out the test. The 16 loci test is more common and provides a DNA test accuracy of 99.9%. If you want a test that provides a higher level of accuracy than 99.99%, then an 18 loci test can be performed on the sample.

Get the DNA results. If you signed to receive the outcome of the test, you can personally go pick it up after four to seven working days. This is commonly enforced for privacy, confidentiality and security reasons.
