Medical Diagnostic Procedures

A myriad of diagnostic tests are used in the medical field. Many times, several diagnostic tests are run on an individual to ascertain a condition. These tests detect whether someone has a disease or some disorder. Diagnostic tests also measure someone's response to a treatment.
  1. Imaging

    • The most common imaging test is the X-ray. This test shows doctors the inside of the body. Other types of imaging tests are the: computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography.

    Endoscopy

    • This test uses a tube to examine organs and bodily cavities. An endoscope is used with a light and camera attached to the end to view internal bodily activity. The nose, anus and mouth are often viewed.

    Body Functions

    • Body functions are examined by examining organs. Electrocardiography measures activity of the heart. Electroencephalography examines activity in the brain.

    Biopsy

    • This tests entails examining tissue samples with a microscope. Tissues that are commonly examined are: lung, bone, kidney and skin.

    Genetic Testing

    • These tests look for anomalies in DNA and chromosomes. Skin and blood are often examined.

    Analysis of Body Fluids

    • Blood, urine and cerebrospinal, and synovial fluids often are analyzed to make proper medical diagnosis.
