  1. Volunteer/Intern

    • Everyone must start somewhere and the best place to start with healthcare is to volunteer or intern at a local nursing home or hospital. Working as a nurse's aide or an orderly will give you great experience with patients and will introduce you to the experiences of hospital housekeepers, cooks, nurses and administrators.

    Make Friends

    • Speak with workers in every field of healthcare. Learn what their jobs entail and the pros and cons of their work. You may find a new path or boost your motivation for your current position.

    Research

    • Stay up to date on the latest advancements, not only in your particular field but also throughout all of medical technology. Read trade journals for your position. They provide excellent tips on how to better your work and will provide career advice if you are looking to advance your status.

    Join Organizations/Forums

    • There are organizations and forums for every type of healthcare work available. They provide excellent motivation, are a great way to gain recognition and can give you advice when you've had a rough day.

    Continue your Education

    • A medical facility will typically inform all its employees of upcoming seminars or workshops. It is always in your best interest to attend whenever possible. You may learn something you missed in your monthly journal.

    Shortages

    • Becoming a nurse or nurse's assistant gives you instant job security. There will always be patients in need, especially in long-term care as today's baby boomers continue towards old age and retirement.
