Skills Needed to Become a Nurse

Nursing is a demanding career that requires a wide range of skills. A nurse has to be able to handle life or death situations while helping others through the crisis. It is essential to evaluate the skills and requirements needed prior to pursuing a career in nursing.
  1. Prior Education

    • In the United States, all nurses must have a minimum of a high school education with either a diploma or GED. Having decent science and math skills are also important for attending nursing school.

    Graduation Requirements

    • Individual states set the requirements for nurse licensing. Registered nurses must obtain a minimum of an Associate's degree in nursing science and in some areas a Bachelor's degree is required. There are other educational requirements for licensed practical nurses and nurse practitioners.

    Physical Skills

    • Nursing requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs unaided. It also requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time.

    People Skills

    • People skills are essential to nursing. Empathy, compassion and the ability to both teach and comfort are the most critical skills for a nurse.

    Considerations

    • According to a study published in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" by Linda H. Aiken, PhD, RN--40 percent of nurses experience burnout. Talk with a career guidance counselor or nursing instructor if you have any concerns before spending the time and money to pursue a nursing career.
