According to data from FAIR Health's annual "Medical Price Index Survey, " the average overall billed charges associated with a basic emergency department visit in the United States were $2,225 for commercially insured patients in 2020. For patients without health insurance, who were either self-pay or not covered by Medicare or Medicaid, average total ER billed charges were reported to be 2.36 time, or two and a half times greater, at $5,249 in the same year.
