How to Obtain a Taxonomy Code
Getting insurance coverage for health care can be confusing and frustrating, not only for the patient, but for the health-care provider as well. When seeking reimbursement for health care, a provider needs the correct code to give to the insurance company. The taxonomy code is alphanumeric, 10 characters in length and refers to the specific type of service provided. Adding to the confusion is the fact that codes are revised twice a year. The wrong code could leave the health-care provider without the proper type of reimbursement.Instructions

Determine exactly what kind of health-care related activity was performed, and be as specific as possible. If a pediatric surgeon performed surgery than you'll need the specific code relating to pediatric surgery, not just pediatric care. The type of service provided is not specific to doctors, but non-health care providers as well, such as custodians and hospital bed crew.

Use the Internet to find a current list of taxonomy codes. Find the codes on a reputable site such as the state medical association. The list is updated every April and October by the National Uniform Claim Committee.

Find the type of service on the updated taxonomy code list. Start by finding the broad heading first, such as pediatric services, then scrolling down to find the specific code for pediatric surgery. Write down the corresponding 10-digit alphanumerical taxonomy code.
