How to Continue With the Same Medicare Part D Coverage

Medicare is a federally subsidized health insurance program in the United States for people of a certain age or disability. Medicare Part D refers to prescription drug coverage offered by insurance companies or other private companies approved by Medicare. Anyone receiving Medicare parts A or B is eligible to enroll in Part D coverage during specified enrollment periods. Generally, the main enrollment period occurs between mid-November and Dec. 31, but exceptions apply. Continuing with the same Medicare Part D coverage from year to year also can be an easy process.

Do nothing. You should receive two documents from your provider informing you of your current coverage and costs and changes for the coming year. Review this information to make certain you wish to keep the same plan. If so, no action is required. You will be automatically re-enrolled unless you take action to cancel the coverage.

Check with your current Part D provider to make certain the plan you've been enrolled in will continue for the upcoming year if you did not receive the two documents from your provider. Obtain your original Plan D enrollment documents, and verify the name of the plan in which you've been enrolled. Visit the plan provider's website for plan information during enrollment, or call the 1-800 number listed on the back of your prescription card. Many plans change from year to year, and some disappear altogether. You also can disqualify yourself from coverage by moving outside of your current plan's coverage area. Ask the representative if you are still eligible for the same plan, if your prescription drugs will continue under the same and if your costs will increase.

Inform the representative you wish to keep the plan coverage in which you've been enrolled. A customer service representative can answer your questions and enroll you in a plan by phone. You also can verify, change or keep your coverage online. Provide your Medicare account number, zip code and other personal information upon request to complete enrollment.
