How to Extend My Assurant Health Policy

Short-term health insurance policies offered by Assurant Health work differently from Assurant's individual health insurance policies in that they cover you for a set period of time and are not renewable. However, should you require a longer period of coverage after your short-term Assurant policy expires, you can apply for a new policy as long as your health has not changed significantly. Assurant does not provide continuous coverage between short term policies and a new plan will therefore not cover conditions that began during the previous plan. Two cases allow for extension of coverage beyond expiration.

    • 1

Apply for another short-term Assurant health policy. Choose from a 30-day policy up to a 185- or 365-day policy, depending on what is offered in your state. Specify when you would like your policy to start. Pay the premium for the new policy on or before the date requested and include payment with your application. Elect to pay one time or through a monthly pay option. Apply only if your health situation has not changed markedly since the last time you applied for coverage. Do not apply if you have a preexisting medical condition developed during the previous plan, as this will preclude you from obtaining short-term coverage.

    • 2

Become covered beyond the expiration of the short-term Assurant health policy if you have a total disability from a condition developed during the earlier coverage. Have the health policy extended up to the earliest of 12 months following the first plan's expiration, the end of the policyholder's total disability, the date when treatment is no longer needed or the payment of the maximum of $2 million stipulated by the policy.

    • 3

Have coverage extended beyond the Assurant short-term health policy's expiration for a non-total disability commenced during the short-term policy. Obtain up to an additional $1000 for expenses incurred for follow-up treatment of an injury or illness that started during the plan. Incur the expenses within 60 days of the policy's expiration. Make sure you met your deductible while your plan was still in effect.
