How to See Claims on Your Medical Card

Medical fraud is rampant. There are providers and medical supply companies that overcharge your health insurance for services provided, or charge your account for services and supplies that you never received. You can review all claims made against your account, to make sure the claims are legitimate. You may also need to view a claim to verify that the provider or supply company has not accidentally submitted incorrect claims, challenge claims denied by your insurance, or to insure that you are correctly reimbursed by your insurance for money spent on services.

Instructions

Call your health insurance carrier. Give the representative the member number provided on your health insurance card, or your full name and Social Security number. Ask the representative about any claims that have been made against your account. The representative will give you a run down of all claims, and can even send you a copy, if requested.

See claims online. Login to your account on your health insurance carrier's website using your user ID and password, or register for an account using your member ID and name. You may also be asked for your date of birth, Social Security number, or zip code. Once logged-in to your account, you can view the status of any pending claims.

Contact the provider directly. The hospital, clinic or medical supply company must provide a list of any claims made against your health insurance for care or services provided. Most providers will accept in-person request and mailed requests. Although mailed requests might require that you provide a copy of your identification, call the provider for more information. You must specify that you want a copy of claims or bills, not records. Providers have 30 days to provide the requested information.
