Finding a mental health provider for your BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) insurance plan may be confusing if you don't know where to start. Thankfully, the BCBS has a search feature that makes finding a doctor fast and easy. To get started, follow these easy steps.

      Go to BlueCross BlueShield's website. The national website address is bcbs.com.

      Click on "Find a Doctor or Hospital" then "Blue National Doctor and Hospital Finder".

      Enter your member ID number and click "Find Provider". Your member ID number is on your insurance card. If you can't locate your insurance card and don't know your ID number, you can access the provider list by using the "guest" feature. If using the guest feature, you must know which type of policy you have, such as a the PPO or BlueCard® Traditional. If you don't know what type of policy you have, visit http://www.bcbs.com/about/contact to find a local BCBS office to assist you. After you enter your zip code, the website will re-direct you to a local BCBS office, and the phone number will be listed on the main page, or under "Contact Us".

      Enter criteria in the search fields, such as an address, radius, or gender preference. To access mental health providers, choose the type of doctor that you are looking for, such as a psychiatrist, counselor or psychologist. Mental health providers are listed under "Behavioral Health", which is the first selection under the specialties menu. There are many different types of mental health providers listed, and many areas of expertise, such as substance abuse issues or end-of-life issues. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

      Review the list of providers and select a provider. You may look at their profiles by clicking "profile" to the right of the provider's name.
