How to Get a Life & Health Insurance License in South Carolina
To sell insurance in South Carolina, you must first obtain a license from the South Carolina Department of Insurance. If you want to sell both life and health insurance, the license you must obtain is the Life, Accident and Health Insurance license. Before issuing a license, the Department of Insurance requires that you pass a criminal background check and pass a licensing examination. After receiving a license, you must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years.Things You'll Need

Submit an electronic application from the South Carolina Department of Insurance website. On the application, provide the requested information about yourself, your work history and your background. Select "Life, Accident and Health Insurance" for the license you are apply for. Pay the application fee, which is $25 as of February 2011, by debit or credit card.

Obtain a criminal history report from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. You order one from the SLED website or by downloading a request from website and submitting it by mail. As of February 2011, the cost of the criminal records report is $25. Mail the criminal history report to the licensing section of the South Carolina Department of Insurance when you receive it.

Register for the Life, Accident and Health Insurance license examination with the South Carolina Department of Insurance's testing vendor, Prometric. You can register directly from the Prometric website or through calling 800-490-6548. Pay the examination fee, which is $51 as of February 2011, by debit/credit card or electronic check.

Go to your chosen examination site and pass the exam by achieving a score of at least 70 percent. You will take the test on a computer and will receive your score when you finish. Prometric will transmit your score to the South Carolina Department of Insurance within two business days. The department will issue your license after it receives your score and approves your application.
