Does Medicare Cover Pregnancy Expenses?
Most people are aware that Medicare is for individuals age 65 and older. Since this is beyond child-bearing years, Medicare is not commonly associated with pregnancy care. However, Medicare is available to disabled and blind adults, regardless of their age. Therefore, if a pregnant woman is on Medicare, her expenses will be covered if she meets this criteria.-
Prenatal and Postnatal Care
-
Medicare Benefit Policy Manual, Chapter 1, section 80 states: "Skilled medical management is appropriate throughout the events of pregnancy, beginning with diagnosis of the condition, continuing through delivery, and ending after the necessary postnatal care." Therefore, Medicare covers doctor visits, labor and delivery expenses and check-ups after delivery through Part B. Care for the infant is not covered by Medicare. Co-pays and deductibles may apply, depending on the plan.
Hospital Services
-
Hospital expenses are covered by Medicare Part A hospital insurance. After collecting disability payments for two years, Social Security automatically enrolls you in Part A. Most people do not pay a Part A premium. In some cases, a premium or deductible may be charged for all hospital or inpatient treatment.
Related Services
-
Medicare will cover the costs related to treatment for a miscarriage. If the pregnancy is a result of incest or rape or threatens the woman's life, an abortion will also be covered. Elective abortions are not covered if you choose to terminate your pregnancy.
Medicaid
-
Low income pregnant women may qualify for the federally funded state health care program, Medicaid. Women can use Medicaid to supplement Medicare. Medicaid can also be used to cover hospital deductibles and co-pays. If the income requirements are met, the newborn child may be eligible for a year of Medicaid coverage.
