Florida State Health Insurance for Children
Florida offers health insurance to children who come from low-income homes. If a child is covered under this insurance program, Florida KidCare, the parents pay little or nothing for their child's health insurance. This program allows children to receive basic health care even if their parents cannot afford it on their own.-
Eligibility
-
Florida KidCare is available to children under the age of 19. Children must not live in a public institution and must not be eligible for Medicaid or be covered by private insurance. The child's family must make less than the federal poverty guidelines for a family of its size, and children must be U.S. citizens or reside legally in the United States to qualify. Families who make too much money to qualify may purchase KidCare insurance at full price for their kids if they choose.
Costs
-
Many low-income families do not have to pay anything for Florida KidCare. If the family has sufficient income, it may be required to pay a premium of $15 to $20 per month, and some doctors may charge co-pays to families for their children's health care under this plan. Families who are ineligible for free coverage must pay the premium at the time of application. If Florida KidCare then determines that such children are eligible for Medicaid coverage, it will refund the premium amount.
Program Types
-
Florida KidCare offers three different programs for needy children. Children ages 1 through 4 receive coverage through MediKids, while children ages 5 through 18 receive health insurance through Healthy Kids. If a child has special needs, he can receive coverage for needs-related health care through the Children's Medical Service Network. These three programs have space limitations and will close enrollments if there are no available spaces left. Families may also qualify for Medicaid through their KidCare application. Medicaid is always open to Florida children regardless of how many children currently receive it.
