How to Qualify for Texas Medicaid With Existing Insurance
Texas Medicaid is a health insurance program funded by the state and federal government. Medicaid provides coverage to low-income families and individuals throughout the state. You usually cannot have Medicaid coverage and private insurance coverage at the same time. If you have insurance through your employer but struggle to pay the costs, you can apply for assistance through the Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) program. This Texas Medicaid program reimburses qualified Medicaid recipients for insurance payments obtained through their employer.Instructions

1
Fit into an eligibility group. Texas Medicaid is available to children and their families, pregnant women, the elderly and the disabled or blind.
-
2
Qualify for Medicaid based on income. To be eligible for the program, you must meet the income and resource requirements based on your household size. Most individuals are not allowed more than $2,000 in countable assets.

3
Meet the insurance and employment requirements. You must be employed and able to get group health insurance from your employer. If you are not employed, you must have COBRA coverage from the former employer.
-
4
Provide the name of your current insurance and policy number. The HIPP program evaluates your current insurance to determine if it is cost effective. Medicaid payments for your household are compared with the cost of the premiums, coinsurance and deductibles for the policy your employer offers. If the cost of insurance is less than your Medicaid payments, the insurance through the employer will be deemed cost effective. If not, you will be eligible for full Medicaid coverage.
