How to Get Reimbursed by Medicare

If you are enrolled in standard Medicare, your doctors and suppliers are required to file Medicare claims for any services or treatment covered. If you are enrolled in a Medicare advantage plan, you may need to file your own claim in some instances. For example, if you receive emergency treatment by a provider not in your network, you will be billed for services. In some cases, you are eligible for reimbursement by Medicare. Follow the claim filing procedure to receive a refund.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the date services were provided. Medicare claims must be filed within one year of receiving treatment.

    • 2

Ask your doctor if he will be filing the claim. According to Medicare, you should only need to file a claim yourself in rare cases.

    • 3

Visit Medicare.gov to print the claim form. Access the form through the "Understanding Claims" section of the site. Click the link to be directed to the Patient's Request for Medical Payment form.

    • 4

Print and complete the form. You will need to fill out all information completely. You will be asked basic questions, such as your name, member ID, gender, and the illness or injury for which you received treatment. If you are employed and have additional insurance coverage, you will need to provide that policy information. Sign and date the form.

    • 5

Make a copy of the itemized bill for service or treatment. The bill must show the date and type of service, place of service, doctor or supplier's name and address.

    • 6

Contact Medicare to obtain the mailing address for your state. Medicare can be reached by calling 800-MEDICARE.
