Contact the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, (SHIP). The national program offers counseling and assistance to Medicare recipients. A counselor will determine your eligibility for co-pay assistance through Medicaid. If approved, Medicaid supplements Medicare by paying the portion of medical and prescription expenses not covered. Apply for aid through the Patient Advocate Foundation's Co-Pay Relief Program. Insured patients who meet the financial criteria and are being treated for a medical condition, such as breast, lung, lymphoma or colon cancer, can apply. As of 2011, the income limit is $14,355 for an individual or $19,245 for a married couple. Call 800-532-5274 to apply.

Visit the Social Security Administration (SSA) to apply for Extra Help. According to the SSA, the federal Extra Help program saves seniors an estimated $4,000 a year.
To qualify for the Extra Help, you must be on Medicare, reside in the United States and have limited income and resources. According to the 2011 guidelines, your resources cannot exceed $12,510 for an individual or $25,010 for a married couple. You cannot earn more than $16,245 for an individual or $21,855 for a married couple.
Some income exceptions apply to the limitations. For example, earnings can be higher if you live in Hawaii or Alaska, or support a family member in your household.
