How to Check Eligibility for a Healthy Family Insurance Plan

The California Healthy Families Insurance program is a low cost insurance plan for children and teens from low income families. The plan covers children up to the age of 19, and even if you are a teenager living apart from your parents, you may be eligible to receive benefits if you do not qualify for state Medi-Cal coverage. Upon approval for the Healthy Families plan, children receive medical, dental and vision benefits.

  Gather income documentation to determine you or your child's financial eligibility. Income must be counted for all adults who live in the household and contribute to the monthly expenses.

  Add the total amount of gross monthly income for everyone in the household. Subtract monthly childcare expenses from the total if your child is in daycare outside the home and you personally pay for that daycare.

  Compare your total gross monthly income to the federal income guideline requirements available on the Healthy Families Program website. You must compare your family size and the age of your youngest child to the maximum allowed monthly income.

  Review the immigration rules to ensure that everyone in your family is a legal resident alien. For example, if you are a permanent resident alien admitted under the Immigration and Nationality Act, you must submit a copy of CIS form I-55, or if you are a refugee admitted to the United States, you must produce a copy of your I-94 form proving that you have been granted refugee status.   Ensure that the children in your household for whom you are seeking medical coverage do not currently have medical coverage under someone else's insurance plan or have not had medical insurance for the last three months.

  Provide proof that you and the children you are applying for are current residents of California.
