How to Qualify for Medicaid in Wayne County, Michigan

To apply for Medicaid services, visit the Wayne County DHS (Department of Human Services) nearest you to complete an "Assistance Application." Upon receipt of your application, a Wayne County DHS Specialist will review it to determine your final eligibility status. If the DHS specialist determines you qualify for Medicaid coverage, you will receive an approval letter in the mail, along with a MiHealth Card for each individual approved for coverage.

      Get Medicaid for your children under the "Healthy Kids" program. To qualify for Healthy Kids, you must have children in your home under the age of 19. Your total household income must meet the federal poverty guidelines, which vary based on the number of individuals in your home (see Resources).

      Get Medicaid for children for whom you have legal guardianship. This is done through the "Caretaker Relative" program. To qualify for Caretaker Relative, the children must be under 18 years old or will graduate before age 19.

      Your income must meet the federal poverty guidelines. If it is higher, you can still qualify; however, you can incur medical expenses equivalent to the excess before Medicaid coverage can begin.

      Get Medicaid as a pregnant woman under "Healthy Kids" or "Group 2 Pregnant Women." There are no age restrictions for pregnant women; however, you must be able to provide proof of your pregnancy.

      To qualify for Healthy Kids, your total household income must meet the federal poverty guidelines. If it is higher, the same rules apply as in Step 2.

      Get "Under 21" Medicaid, if you are under the age of 21. To qualify, your total household income must meet the federal poverty guidelines. If higher, the same rules again apply.

      Get Medicaid if you are blind, elderly or disabled. To qualify, you must provide proof of your age (over 65), blindness or disability. You must meet the federal income guidelines to avoid out-of-pocket expenses. The same rules apply if your income is higher.
