Florida has a growing population of almost 19 million residents, according to the 2010 census. Almost four million Florida residents receive insurance from employer-offered commercial health insurance plans. The largest providers in Florida include United Healthcare Insurance Company, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Florida and Aetna Health Inc. Citrus Health, Inc., the state's smallest HMO, insures just 238 people. Eight Healthy Kids HMOs insure more than 200,000 children in Florida.-

United Healthcare (UHC) insures Florida residents in all counties. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation reports that, as of March 31, 2010, United Healthcare insured 1,152,059 residents. Insured satisfaction with United Healthcare in Florida is high: Most insureds report high satisfaction with UHC plans and would recommend this insurance to friends and family. UHC offers a broad range of small- and large-business plans. Solo business owners and groups of two to more than 5,000 have a variety of UHC plans from which to choose. A.M. Best gives UHC an "A," or excellent, credit quality rating.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Florida, Inc.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Florida, an independent license holder of the Blue Cross & Blue Shield Association, insures more than 1.1 million Florida residents in all counties, according to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. Most of BCBSFL insureds report overall high satisfaction with their insurance and would recommend to a family or friend. Insureds report slightly less satisfaction with the ease of obtaining needed care, doctor communication, number of doctors and claims processing. A.M. Best gives BCBSFL an "A" in financial strength and credit rating.

Aetna Health, a fully accredited commercial health maintenance organization by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), insures almost 400,000 Florida residents in 36 counties, according to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. Aetna Health's HMO coverage includes breast cancer screens, well-child visits, hypertension screens and management, diabetes testing and control, asthma and chlamydia tests for women. Plan participants reported average satisfaction with Aetna Health insurance plans. A.M. Best reports Aetna Health deserves an "A" for credit quality and financial stability.
Health Flex

Developed and administered by the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration and the Florida Department of Financial Services, Health Flex helps low-income residents obtain basic health insurance access. Health Flex is available in Broward, Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Polk counties at year-end 2010. The program interacts with insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, healthcare districts, local health departments and private community health organizations.
