Who is Eligible for TRICARE Prime?

TRICARE Prime is health insurance for active duty military members and their families. Military retirees and their families are also eligible for TRICARE Prime. There are several options within TRICARE Prime to choose from.

  1. Active Duty Military

    • Enrollment in TRICARE Prime is required for active duty military members. Enrollment is free and all medical treatments and medications are free.

    Active Duty Family Members

    • TRICARE Prime enrollment is optional for family members and is free. If family members have access to a military medical facility, care and medications are free. Family members can opt to receive medical care from a private health care provider. Expenses are on a cost-share basis.

    Retired Military

    • TRICARE Prime is premium-based and optional for retired service members. Care and medications at a military facility are free. Care at a TRICARE-approved private health care provider results in a $12 office charge and heavily reduced-price medication. Tests and procedures are mostly free.

    Retired Military Family Members

    • TRICARE Prime offers a premium-based optional family plan. This plan entitles retired military family members to receive free medical care from a military facility. Coverage at a TRICARE-approved private medical facility includes a $12 office visit fee and a cost-share for some tests and procedures. Medication is also at a reduced price.
