Financial Assistance Grants for Medical Bills

If you or a loved one have a serious illness, you may find it difficult to pay all of the accompanying medical bills. You may qualify for financial assistance grants that can cover some of the cost, however. You also can apply for more than one grant if you meet the eligibility criteria for them. You may need to provide information about your income and any health insurance policies you hold when you apply as well as information about your medical condition.

  1. American Kidney Fund

    • The American Kidney Fund offers grants for those with kidney disease. The grants can be used to pay for health insurance premiums and other treatment-related expenses not covered by health insurance. You can download an application for assistance online.

    Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund

    • The Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund offers grants for those ages 18 to 40 suffering from cancer. The Fund's website states that people generally receive around $600 and that they can use the grants to pay for home health services and health insurance co-pays or deductibles. Unfortunately, the Fund had to temporarily suspend its grant program due to lack of funds, but the website reports the program is expected to resume in May 2011.

    Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund

    • The Kelly Anne Dolan Memorial Fund offers grants for families of critically ill children. Families can use the money to pay for health insurance co-pays, medical supplies not covered by health insurance policies, medically necessary dietary supplements and foods and special equipment needed, such as wheelchairs, for children with disabilities. Families can also use grant money from the fund for non-medical needs like housing and transportation.

    United Healthcare Children's Fund

    • The United Healthcare Children's Fund offers grants for seriously ill children. Families can use the money to pay for physical therapy, speech therapy, wheelchairs, hearing aids and other medical services and supplies. You can apply for a grant online. The Fund's website says it can take one to three months for a response so apply as soon as you realize you need assistance.
