How to Find a Specialty Pharmacy

Specialty pharmacies cater to the needs of those individuals who are suffering from illnesses which incur large fees from the cost of long term use of prescription medications and nursing care. These illnesses include hemophilia, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and cystic fibrosis just to name a few. Most medical insurers use Pharmaceutical Benefits Managers (PBMs) to handle the process of cost reduction, claim filing and connecting the patient with the drugs and care. When looking for a specialty pharmacy that caters to your specific illness in your region, your PBM will be able to give you a list of qualified pharmacies that will be covered by your insurance.

Contact your medical insurance company and ask who their PBM provider is. You can either do this via the internet or the telephone, with the latter being the quicker way to get a response. It is likely that your insurance provider utilizes one of the top three PBM providers which are Express Scripts, CVS Caremark and Medco.

Check the website of your designated PBM. You may have to use your insurance member number or register on the site to view the locations of specialty pharmacies that offer the medication and services that you are in need of. Once you find a pharmacy, write down the phone number and address.

Call the specialty pharmacy. Verify that they accept your insurance and offer the drugs and care services that you require. When you are ready give them your insurance information such as your member number and place your prescription order. Some specialty pharmacies will offer home shipping, which can be useful if there are no pharmacies within reasonable driving distance.
