Veteran's Benefits & Elder Care
Veterans who served during a time of war, or their surviving spouses, may be eligible for benefits that pay for elder care via the Aid and Attendance Pension. The key to being approved for these benefits is providing ample documentation of service and medical reasons for needing care.-
Qualifications
-
To qualify, the veteran and/or spouse must meet certain income levels and must have been on active duty for at least one day during a war period. Combat service is not required.
Benefit Amount
-
Approximate monthly benefit amounts as of December 2009 are up to $1600 for a veteran, up to $1000 for a surviving spouse and up to $1900 for a couple. Benefit amounts may change each year.
Documentation
-
Applicants must include ample documentation with their applications. Include proof of service and a doctor's explanation of the type of help needed, such as help dressing or assistance when leaving home. Many eligible seniors are denied benefits because they did not attach proper documentation, although often the reason for denial is not given.
