How to Obtain an Accident & Health Insurance License in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) issues accident and health insurance licenses to individuals who want to sell those types of insurance in the state. You must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Ohio to apply for a license. Once you obtain an accident and health license, you must complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain your license. ODI has a contract with Pearson VUE for the administration of the examinations.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete a 20-hour pre-licensing course from an approved education provider or an approved self-study course. The ODI website offers lists of providers for both types of course.

    • 2

Register for the accident and health examination on the Pearson VUE website or by calling 800-275-8361. You will have to pay the fees, which are, as of October 2010, $53 for the examination and $10 for the license application. The fees can be paid by debit card, credit card or electronic check.

    • 3

Go to the Pearson VUE testing center on your scheduled day and pass the examination by scoring at least 70 percent. You have two hours to complete the examination. You will receive your score at the end of the examination.

    • 4

Submit your application to the ODI electronically from a computer kiosk located in the testing center. You may also submit the application by mail by downloading an application from the ODI website and mailing it to:

Have your fingerprints taken by an approved vendor for a background check. You will find a list of approved vendors on the ODI website. Upon approval of the background check and your application, the ODI will mail you your license.
